Overview

StreptInCor is a recombinant protein subunit vaccine candidate designed to prevent infections caused by *Streptococcus pyogenes* (Group A Streptococcus) and its severe sequelae, including rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease. Developed by researchers at the Heart Institute (InCor) of the University of São Paulo, the vaccine utilizes a 55-amino acid peptide derived from the conserved C-terminal region of the M protein. This specific sequence was selected to induce a protective immune response while avoiding the autoimmune cross-reactivity associated with other regions of the M protein, which can lead to carditis and other tissue damage. By targeting a conserved region, StreptInCor aims to provide broad protection against multiple serotypes of Group A Streptococcus, addressing a significant global health burden particularly prevalent in developing nations.
