Overview

Streptococcus dentisani CECT 7746 is a live biotherapeutic product developed by AB-Biotics for the prevention of dental caries. [1, 2] It is a specific strain of bacteria originally isolated from the dental plaque of caries-free individuals. [1] The proposed mechanism of action involves colonizing the oral cavity, producing ammonia from amino acids found in saliva to increase and balance the oral pH, and producing bacteriocins that inhibit the growth of cariogenic pathogens like Streptococcus mutans. [1, 7] A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase 1 clinical trial (NCT03468842) has been completed to evaluate its efficacy and safety in reducing caries risk. [1]
