Overview

Streptococcus pneumoniae bacterial lysate is an immunomodulating agent developed by Laboratorio Farmaceutico S.I.T. - Specialita' Igienico Terapeutiche S.r.l. for the prevention and treatment of recurrent lower respiratory tract infections. It consists of lysed bacterial cells of Streptococcus pneumoniae, which act as antigens to stimulate the mucosal immune system. The mechanism of action involves the activation of innate immune receptors, such as Toll-like receptors (TLR2 and TLR4), on dendritic cells and macrophages in the nasopharynx-associated lymphoid tissue (NALT). This stimulation leads to the production of pro-inflammatory and immunomodulatory cytokines, the maturation of antigen-presenting cells, and the subsequent activation of the adaptive immune system, specifically increasing the production of secretory IgA (sIgA) and enhancing T-cell responses. This oral vaccination effect helps to reduce the frequency and severity of respiratory infections by preventing bacterial colonization and enhancing pathogen clearance. While monovalent preparations like Pneumolantigen were previously marketed, this lysate is also a key component of polyvalent bacterial lysate formulations such as Lantigen B.
