Overview

Streptococcus pneumoniae type 1 capsular polysaccharide diphtheria CRM197 protein conjugate antigen is a sterile vaccine component consisting of the purified capsular polysaccharide from Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 1, chemically activated and covalently linked to the carrier protein CRM197, a nontoxic mutant of diphtheria toxin derived from Corynebacterium diphtheriae. This glycoconjugate is designed to induce a robust, T-cell dependent immune response against S. pneumoniae serotype 1 by enhancing immunogenicity compared to unconjugated polysaccharides. It is used as part of multivalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccines for the prevention of invasive diseases (such as bacteremia and meningitis), otitis media, and pneumonia caused by S. pneumoniae serotype 1[1][4][6]. The mechanism involves presentation of the bacterial carbohydrate antigen in a form that elicits strong antibody production and immunological memory.
