Overview
Streptococcus pneumoniae type 10a capsular polysaccharide antigen is a highly purified component derived from the capsule of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 10A. It is used as an active immunizing agent in vaccines to induce immunity against invasive pneumococcal diseases, including pneumococcal pneumonia and bacteremia. The mechanism of action involves stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies specific to the serotype 10A capsule, thereby providing protection through actively acquired immunity. This antigen is included in both standalone and multivalent (polyvalent) pneumococcal vaccines such as Pneumovax 23 and Prevnar 20, which are indicated for prevention of diseases caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae[6][8][1]. The product is classified as an inactivated vaccine and falls under the category of biologics.
