Streptococcus pneumoniae type 12f capsular polysaccharide antigen is a highly purified component derived from the capsule of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 12F. It is used as an active immunization agent, either alone or as part of multivalent pneumococcal vaccines, to prevent diseases such as pneumococcal pneumonia and bacteremia. The mechanism of action involves stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies against the serotype-specific capsule, thereby providing protection against invasive disease caused by S. pneumoniae serotype 12F. This antigen is included in both unconjugated (polysaccharide) and conjugate vaccine formulations, such as PPSV23 (Pneumovax 23) and PCV20/PCV21 (Prevnar/Vaxneuvance/CAPVAXIVE), which are approved for use in adults and sometimes children for prevention of invasive pneumococcal disease[3][6][7].
