Overview

Streptococcus pneumoniae type 12F capsular polysaccharide diphtheria CRM197 protein conjugate antigen is a component of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines. It consists of the purified capsular polysaccharide from Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 12F, chemically linked (conjugated) to CRM197, a nontoxic mutant of diphtheria toxin. This conjugation enhances immunogenicity by inducing a T-cell dependent immune response, leading to improved antibody production and immunological memory compared to unconjugated polysaccharides. The primary indication is active immunization for the prevention of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), including conditions such as pneumococcal pneumonia and bacteremia caused by S. pneumoniae serotype 12F[3][1]. This antigen is included in multivalent vaccines such as CAPVAXIVE (21-valent) and others that target multiple S. pneumoniae serotypes[1][5]. These vaccines are primarily used in adults for protection against IPD.
