Overview

This is a vaccine antigen consisting of the purified capsular polysaccharide from Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 14, chemically activated and covalently linked (conjugated) to the non-toxic mutant diphtheria toxin protein carrier, CRM197. The purpose of this conjugation is to enhance immunogenicity by inducing a T-cell dependent immune response, which leads to improved antibody production and immunological memory compared to unconjugated polysaccharides. This specific component is used as part of multivalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (such as PCV7, PCV13, or higher-valency PCVs), which are indicated for active immunization against invasive disease caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae in infants, children, and adults[1][3][5]. The mechanism involves presentation of the bacterial capsule sugar antigens in a form that elicits robust immune responses via T-helper cell activation.
