Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Streptococcus pneumoniae type 19a capsular polysaccharide antigen is a highly purified component derived from the capsule of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 19A. It is used as an active immunizing agent in several pneumococcal vaccines to prevent invasive diseases such as pneumococcal pneumonia and bacteremia. The mechanism of action involves stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies against the serotype-specific capsular polysaccharides, thereby providing protection against infection by S. pneumoniae serotype 19A. This antigen is included in multivalent conjugate and polysaccharide vaccines developed for broad protection against multiple S. pneumoniae serotypes[7][8][6]. Major developers and manufacturers include Pfizer (Prevnar series), Merck (Vaxneuvance), and Wyeth Pharmaceuticals (now part of Pfizer)[6][8].
