Overview

Streptococcus pneumoniae type 19f capsular polysaccharide antigen is a highly purified component derived from the capsule of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 19F. It is used as an active immunizing agent in several vaccines to prevent diseases caused by S. pneumoniae, including invasive infections such as pneumonia and bacteremia. The antigen works by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies specific to the serotype, thereby providing protection against infection. In conjugate vaccines (such as Prevnar and Synflorix), this antigen is chemically linked to a carrier protein (like diphtheria toxoid or CRM197) to enhance immunogenicity, especially in young children[3][5][6]. The primary indication for these vaccines is prevention of invasive pneumococcal disease.
