Streptococcus pneumoniae type 2 capsular polysaccharide antigen is a highly purified bacterial carbohydrate derived from the capsule of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 2. It is used as an active immunizing agent in vaccines to induce immunity against invasive pneumococcal diseases, such as pneumonia and bacteremia, caused by S. pneumoniae serotype 2. The mechanism of action involves stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies specific to the serotype 2 capsule, thereby providing protection against infection by this strain. This antigen is included in multivalent pneumococcal vaccines like Pneumovax 23 (PPSV23), which contains purified capsular polysaccharides from multiple S. pneumoniae serotypes[7][5]. These vaccines are administered via intramuscular or subcutaneous injection for prophylaxis against pneumococcal disease.
