Streptococcus pneumoniae type 23F capsular polysaccharide antigen is a highly purified bacterial capsular polysaccharide derived from the invasive serotype 23F of Streptococcus pneumoniae. It is used as an active immunization agent, administered intramuscularly or subcutaneously, to prevent diseases caused by S. pneumoniae, such as pneumococcal pneumonia and bacteremia. The mechanism of action involves inducing the production of type-specific antibodies that enhance opsonization and phagocytosis of the bacteria by immune cells. This antigen is included in multivalent vaccines like Pneumovax 23 (PPSV23), which contains purified capsular polysaccharides from multiple S. pneumoniae serotypes, including 23F[3][6][7]. These vaccines are primarily indicated for high-risk adults and children to reduce morbidity and mortality associated with invasive pneumococcal disease[4][6].
