Streptococcus pneumoniae type 3 capsular polysaccharide diphtheria CRM197 protein conjugate antigen is a sterile vaccine composed of saccharides from the capsular antigens of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 3 that are individually conjugated to the CRM197 carrier protein—a nontoxic variant of diphtheria toxin. The saccharides are purified and chemically activated before being linked to the carrier. This glycoconjugate formulation enhances immunogenicity by inducing a T-cell dependent immune response, which is particularly effective in young children and immunocompromised individuals who respond poorly to plain polysaccharide vaccines. The primary indication is active immunization against pneumococcal disease caused by S. pneumoniae serotype 3, including invasive diseases such as bacteremia and meningitis as well as non-invasive diseases like pneumonia[7][2][8]. It is included in multivalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (such as PCV13/Prevnar 13) that target multiple S. pneumoniae serotypes.
