Overview
Streptococcus pneumoniae type 5 capsular polysaccharide antigen is a purified bacterial carbohydrate derived from the capsule of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 5. It is used as an active immunogen in pneumococcal vaccines, either as a standalone component or conjugated to carrier proteins to enhance immunogenicity. The mechanism of action involves stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies specifically targeting the serotype 5 capsule, thereby providing protection against invasive disease caused by S. pneumoniae serotype 5. This antigen is included in several multivalent pneumococcal vaccines (such as PCV15, PCV20, and PPSV23) that are indicated for prevention of diseases like invasive pneumococcal disease and pneumonia[2][7][9].
