Streptococcus pneumoniae type 5 capsular polysaccharide diphtheria CRM197 protein conjugate antigen is a component of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs), which are designed to protect against disease caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae. The vaccine contains purified capsular polysaccharides from specific serotypes of S. pneumoniae (in this case, type 5) that are chemically linked (conjugated) to a nontoxic variant of the diphtheria toxin known as CRM197. This conjugation enhances the immune response compared to non-conjugated vaccines by promoting T-cell dependent immunity and improved immunological memory[1][2][3][4][5]. The primary mechanism of action is induction of opsonizing antibodies that facilitate phagocytosis and killing of S. pneumoniae[3][8]. These vaccines are primarily indicated for prevention of invasive pneumococcal diseases such as bacteremia, meningitis, and pneumonia in infants, children, and adults[2][4].
