Streptococcus pneumoniae type 6a capsular polysaccharide antigen is a purified bacterial carbohydrate derived from the capsule of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 6A. It is used as an active immunogen in the formulation of pneumococcal vaccines to induce immunity against infections caused by this serotype. The mechanism of action involves stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies specific to the serotype 6A capsule, thereby providing protection against invasive pneumococcal disease and pneumonia caused by S. pneumoniae serotype 6A. This antigen is included as a component in several multivalent conjugate vaccines (such as Vaxneuvance and Pneumosil) and has been manufactured for research purposes by companies like Pfizer[2][5][6]. Its primary indication is for use in vaccine formulations for prevention of diseases such as invasive pneumococcal disease and pneumococcal pneumonia.
