Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Streptococcus pneumoniae type 6b capsular polysaccharide antigen is a highly purified component derived from the capsule of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 6B. It is used as an active immunizing agent in several pneumococcal vaccines to prevent diseases such as pneumococcal pneumonia and bacteremia. The antigen works by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies against the specific serotype, thereby providing protection against infection. This antigen is included in both conjugate and polysaccharide vaccines (such as Pneumovax 23, Prevnar 13/20, Vaxneuvance), which are approved for use in various age groups for prevention of invasive pneumococcal disease[7][5][6]. Major developers and manufacturers include Pfizer (Prevnar series), Merck (Vaxneuvance), and GlaxoSmithKline (Synflorix)[1][5][6].
