Overview

Streptococcus pneumoniae type 6B capsular polysaccharide diphtheria CRM197 protein conjugate antigen is a component of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines. It consists of the purified capsular polysaccharide from Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 6B chemically linked (conjugated) to CRM197, a non-toxic mutant of diphtheria toxin used as a carrier protein to enhance immunogenicity[2][3][7]. This conjugation enables the immune system to mount a robust T-cell dependent response against the bacterial capsule. The primary indication is active immunization for the prevention of invasive diseases caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, such as pneumococcal pneumonia and bacteremia[2][3]. The mechanism involves inducing production of antibodies that target the serotype-specific capsule, facilitating opsonization and clearance of the bacteria. Vaccines containing this antigen are developed for pediatric and adult use.
