Overview

Streptococcus pneumoniae type 7F capsular polysaccharide diphtheria CRM197 protein conjugate antigen is a component of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines designed to protect against invasive disease caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 7F. The vaccine contains purified capsular polysaccharide from S. pneumoniae serotype 7F, which is chemically activated and covalently linked (conjugated) to the non-toxic mutant diphtheria toxin protein CRM197. This conjugation enhances immunogenicity by inducing a T-cell dependent immune response, resulting in improved antibody production and immunological memory compared to unconjugated polysaccharide vaccines[1][4][5][6]. The primary mechanism of action is the induction of opsonizing antibodies that facilitate phagocytosis and clearance of S. pneumoniae bacteria expressing the type 7F capsule[6]. This antigen is included as one component in multivalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccines such as Prevnar 13 (PCV13), PCV21 (Capvaxive), and others.
