Overview
Streptococcus pneumoniae type 8 capsular polysaccharide antigen is a highly purified bacterial carbohydrate derived from the capsule of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 8. It is used as an active immunizing agent in vaccines to prevent diseases caused by S. pneumoniae, such as pneumococcal pneumonia and bacteremia. The mechanism of action involves stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies against the serotype-specific capsule, thereby providing protection against infection by this strain. This antigen is included in multivalent vaccines like Pneumovax 23 and Prevnar 20, which are indicated for prevention of invasive pneumococcal disease[4][1].
