Overview

Streptococcus salivarius is a species of spherical, gram-positive, facultative anaerobic lactic acid bacteria that is both catalase and oxidase negative. It is one of the first colonizers of the human oral cavity and gut after birth. Certain strains, particularly K12 and M18, are used as probiotics to prevent oral infections and support immune function. These strains produce bacteriocin-like inhibitory substances (BLIS) including lantibiotics such as Salivaricin A2 and Salivaricin B, which inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria like Streptococcus pyogenes (which causes strep throat), Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Moraxella catarrhalis. S. salivarius probiotics are typically administered as lozenges, chewable tablets, or oral powders to promote colonization of the oral cavity and upper respiratory tract.
