Overview
Streptococcus salivarius K12 is an oral probiotic strain isolated from the saliva of a healthy New Zealand child in 1989. It produces two lantibiotics (salivaricin A2 and salivaricin B) that antagonize the growth of Streptococcus pyogenes and other bacterial pathogens. The probiotic is used to prevent recurrent streptococcal and viral infections, reduce oral mucositis, inhibit volatile sulfur compounds associated with halitosis, and improve oral health.
