Overview

**Streptococcus salivarius M18** is a specific probiotic strain of the species *Streptococcus salivarius* used as an oral probiotic, primarily for the maintenance and restoration of oral health. M18 is naturally found in the human oral cavity and is characterized by its ability to produce multiple bacteriocins (including salivaricins A, MPS, M, 9, A2, and B) that inhibit pathogenic bacteria, particularly those associated with dental caries and periodontal disease. M18 also produces enzymes such as urease and dextranase, which respectively increase local pH and degrade biofilm matrix, thereby reducing dental plaque accumulation. Additionally, M18 exerts immunomodulatory effects, such as downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines. It is administered primarily as an adjunctive therapy for periodontal health, having demonstrated efficacy in reducing gingival bleeding, plaque accumulation, and oral pathogen load in clinical trials. Common formulations include oral lozenges, which facilitate colonization and exert localized effects in the oral cavity[1][2][3][4][5].
