Drug intelligence / Profile preview
*Streptococcus thermophilus* is a Gram-positive, thermophilic lactic acid bacterium utilized as a live biotherapeutic product (probiotic). It is being investigated by LactoResearch sprl, specifically as a component of a 5-strain probiotic mixture for the treatment of lactose intolerance. The therapeutic effect is mediated by the bacterium's production of beta-galactosidase (lactase), an enzyme that hydrolyzes dietary lactose into glucose and galactose within the gastrointestinal tract, thereby alleviating symptoms such as bloating, flatulence, and diarrhea. A Phase 3 clinical trial in Belgian adults has evaluated its efficacy in improving lactose digestion, as measured by hydrogen breath testing and symptom logs.
