Overview

Streptococcus thermophilus iHA318 is a specific probiotic strain investigated for its therapeutic potential in managing dry eye syndrome (DES). Administered orally, this live biotherapeutic product is thought to exert its effects through a gut-immune-ocular axis. A clinical trial (NCT05906381) in participants with DES demonstrated that daily intake of iHA318 for 35 days led to significant improvements in clinical signs and symptoms, including increased tear volume, improved tear osmolarity, and prolonged tear break-up time. The proposed mechanism involves modulation of the gut microbiota, which leads to systemic anti-inflammatory effects, including the suppression of NLRP3 inflammasome activation on the ocular surface. Additionally, an increase in serum sialic acid levels was observed, suggesting a potential enhancement of the mucin response and tear film stability.
