Overview

Streptodornase is an enzyme produced by certain strains of hemolytic Streptococci, notably *Streptococcus equisimilis*. It acts as a deoxyribonuclease (DNase), catalyzing the depolymerization of deoxyribonucleoproteins in dead cells and pus, thereby liquefying these components in wounds. This mucolytic action facilitates the removal of clotted blood, fibrinous or purulent accumulations from surface lesions or closed body cavities. Streptodornase is often used in combination with another enzyme, streptokinase; together they are applied topically or instilled to treat conditions involving blood clots and purulent exudates such as hemothorax, hematomas, chronic suppurations, and sometimes for respiratory tract infections. The mechanism involves stimulating DNase I activity to break down DNA-rich material in necrotic tissue[1][2][3][4][6].
