Overview

Streptokinase is a purified fibrinolytic bacterial protein derived from group C beta-hemolytic streptococci. It is used as a thrombolytic agent to dissolve blood clots in the treatment of acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), pulmonary embolism, deep venous thrombosis, and arterial thromboembolism. Streptokinase acts by forming a complex with plasminogen, which then converts additional plasminogen molecules into plasmin. Plasmin is an active proteolytic enzyme that degrades fibrin clots as well as fibrinogen and other plasma proteins, leading to the dissolution of blood clots[1][2][3][4][5][6]. The drug is administered intravenously or intracoronarily and has been shown to improve survival when given soon after heart attack symptoms begin[1].
