Streptolydigin is a small molecule antibiotic isolated from the culture filtrates of Streptomyces lydicus. It acts by inhibiting bacterial RNA polymerase, specifically binding to the enzyme and blocking nucleic acid chain elongation, thereby halting RNA synthesis in bacteria. This mechanism is selective for bacterial RNA polymerase and does not affect eukaryotic RNA polymerases. Streptolydigin exhibits antibacterial activity primarily against Gram-positive bacteria (excluding micrococci) and some anaerobes. It is structurally classified as a 3-acetyltetramic acid antibiotic and has been studied mainly as an experimental compound; it has not been approved for clinical use[1][2][6].
