Overview

Streptomyces hyaluronidase is a highly specific hyaluronate lyase enzyme derived from the bacterium *Streptomyces hyalurolyticus*. It functions by cleaving the beta-1,4-glycosidic linkages of hyaluronan (hyaluronic acid), a major component of the extracellular matrix, resulting in the formation of unsaturated oligosaccharides. Unlike animal-derived testicular hyaluronidases, the *Streptomyces* variant is highly selective for hyaluronan and does not degrade other glycosaminoglycans such as chondroitin sulfate or dermatan sulfate. In research settings, it is frequently employed as a high-purity laboratory tool to study the role of the pericellular hyaluronan coat and its degradation products (HA fragments) in biological processes. Specifically, it is used to investigate how HA fragmentation mediates inflammatory signaling pathways, such as p38-NFkβ, and contributes to tumor formation in models of melanomagenesis.
