Overview

Stromal vascular fraction (SVF) is an autologous, heterogeneous cell product derived from subcutaneous adipose tissue, typically obtained via lipoaspiration. It contains a diverse population of cells, including mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs), pericytes, endothelial progenitor cells, fibroblasts, and various immune cells. Unlike culture-expanded stem cell therapies, SVF is minimally manipulated and can be prepared in a point-of-care setting or a centralized cGMP facility through enzymatic digestion (e.g., collagenase) and centrifugation. SVF exerts its therapeutic effects through immunomodulation, reduction of inflammatory cytokines (such as IL-1β and TNF-α), and the promotion of a regenerative microenvironment via paracrine signaling. It is primarily investigated for the treatment of osteoarthritis (particularly of the knee and hip), where it aims to reduce pain and potentially facilitate cartilage regeneration, though it has also been explored in conditions like psoriasis, migraine, and Crohn's disease fistulas.
