Overview

Stromal vascular fraction (SVF) cells are an autologous, cell-based biologic therapy derived from a patient's own adipose tissue, currently being investigated by AdventHealth for the non-operative treatment of small partial-thickness rotator cuff tears. SVF is obtained via lipoaspiration and contains a heterogeneous population of cells, including adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADSCs), endothelial progenitor cells, and other regenerative cells. These cells are thought to promote tissue healing and regeneration of damaged tendons by secreting growth factors and differentiating into various cell types, such as tenocytes. In clinical studies (notably NCT05264922), the SVF cells are extracted, processed, and injected directly into the rotator cuff defect, often in combination with a biocompatible scaffold like fibrin glue (Tisseel) to ensure retention at the site of injury and combined with a structured exercise program.
