Overview

Stromal vascular fraction (SVF) of adipose tissue is an autologous cell-based biologic therapy derived from a patient's own adipose tissue. It consists of a heterogeneous population of cells, including adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADSCs), endothelial progenitor cells, pericytes, and various immune cells. In the context of knee osteoarthritis, SVF is typically harvested via liposuction (often using systems like Lipogems), processed to remove mature adipocytes and blood, and then injected intra-articularly. The therapeutic effect is attributed to the paracrine release of anti-inflammatory cytokines, growth factors, and chemokines that modulate the joint environment, reduce inflammation, and potentially promote tissue repair or slow cartilage degeneration. It is currently being investigated in clinical trials, such as those led by Hvidovre University Hospital, as a regenerative treatment for degenerative joint diseases.
