Overview

StroMel is an investigational cell therapy composed of autologous mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) developed by Akan Biosciences. It is administered via intraarticular injection and is currently in Phase II clinical development for the treatment of knee, hip, and shoulder osteoarthritis, as well as wound healing and autism in children. The primary mechanism of action involves the paracrine signaling (secretion of extracellular vesicles/cytokines) that modulate immune responses, promote tissue repair, reduce inflammation, and support regeneration. Mesenchymal stem cells are also known to transfer mitochondria to nearby cells and may exert anti-fibrotic effects through immunomodulation[1][6][7][8].
