Strontium cation Sr-89 is a radioactive isotope of strontium used as a radiopharmaceutical therapeutic agent. It decays by beta emission with a half-life of approximately 50.5 days, emitting beta particles that penetrate tissues up to about 8 mm. After intravenous administration, the soluble form behaves similarly to calcium, rapidly clearing from the bloodstream and localizing in bone mineral—especially at sites of active osteogenesis such as metastatic bone lesions. The emitted radiation provides targeted pain relief for patients with painful skeletal metastases, most commonly from prostate or breast cancer. There is also some evidence suggesting potential tumoricidal effects due to localized radiation exposure[1][2][3][4].
