Strychnos nux-vomica, specifically in the homeopathic preparation Nux vomica C200, is a highly diluted plant extract derived from the seeds of the Strychnos nux-vomica tree. It is being investigated by the Medical University of Vienna in a Phase 4 clinical trial for the prophylaxis of postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) in adult patients undergoing cardiac surgery, such as aortocoronary bypass or heart valve surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass. Administered sublingually as globules, the preparation is evaluated for its potential to prevent arrhythmias and its effects on electrolyte balance.
