Stryphnodendron adstringens

Stryphnodendron adstringens is a tree native to Brazil and commonly known as "barbatimão." The stem bark is widely used in traditional medicine for its wound-healing, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and astringent properties. Its pharmacological effects are attributed to high levels of tannins and polyphenols such as gallic acid and catechins (including epigallocatechin gallate), as well as other flavonoids like quercetin and kaempferol. Extracts from the bark have demonstrated immunomodulatory activity by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokine expression in vitro. Additional reported activities include antiprotozoal, hypoglycemic, antiviral effects, antioxidant properties, and potential anticancer activity.
