Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This investigational sustained-release subconjunctival (episcleral) implant was developed by the National Eye Institute (NEI) for the treatment of ocular graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). The implant consists of a silicone-based matrix that provides continuous local delivery of cyclosporine, a calcineurin inhibitor and immunosuppressive agent. By delivering the drug directly to the subconjunctival space adjacent to the lacrimal gland, the implant aims to bypass epithelial barriers and treat aqueous tear deficiency and lacrimal gland inflammation while avoiding the systemic side effects associated with oral immunosuppression. It has been evaluated in Phase I clinical trials to assess safety and efficacy in patients following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
