Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sublingual liraglutide is a biobetter formulation of the GLP-1 receptor agonist liraglutide, developed by **Biolingus** using its proprietary **OPUS (Oral Peptide Ultra-fast System)** technology. This formulation is designed for non-invasive sublingual administration, providing a patient-friendly alternative to the standard subcutaneous injections (such as Victoza). Liraglutide acts as a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, mimicking endogenous GLP-1 to enhance glucose-dependent insulin secretion, suppress inappropriate glucagon release, and slow gastric emptying. The sublingual delivery system utilizes specific stabilization and transport mechanisms to allow the peptide to cross the sublingual mucosa effectively. It is currently being evaluated in Phase Ib/IIa clinical trials for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus and is also in development for obesity.
