Overview
Suboxone is a combination pharmaceutical product consisting of buprenorphine, a partial mu-opioid receptor agonist, and naloxone, a mu-opioid receptor antagonist. It is primarily indicated for the maintenance treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD). The sublingual film formulation was developed using PharmFilm technology to provide a fast-dissolving delivery system that is difficult to divert or misuse. Buprenorphine suppresses withdrawal symptoms and cravings by partially activating opioid receptors, while naloxone is included as a deterrent to intravenous abuse; if the film is dissolved and injected, the naloxone component precipitates intense withdrawal symptoms. The product was developed by Indivior (formerly a division of Reckitt Benckiser) in collaboration with Aquestive Therapeutics.
