A **subunit inactivated influenza vaccine** is a type of influenza vaccine prepared by chemically inactivating whole influenza virus, followed by further purification to isolate the major viral surface glycoproteins hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA), while removing other viral components. This process yields a vaccine containing only the essential antigenic proteins needed to stimulate protective immunity. Subunit inactivated influenza vaccines elicit an immune response primarily by inducing the production of antibodies targeting HA and NA. Adjuvants are sometimes added to increase immunogenicity. Subunit vaccines are considered safer and less reactogenic than whole-virion or split-virus vaccines, but may be less immunogenic in individuals not previously exposed to influenza, sometimes requiring multiple doses. These vaccines are widely approved and used for the prevention of influenza in pediatric, adult, and elderly populations, often as trivalent (IIV3) or quadrivalent (IIV4) formulations.
