Overview

Sucralfate is a cytoprotective agent primarily used to treat and prevent gastrointestinal ulcers. Chemically, it is a basic aluminum salt of sucrose octasulfate. In the acidic environment of the stomach, it undergoes polymerization to form a viscous, paste-like substance that selectively binds to the proteins of ulcerated tissue, creating a physical barrier against gastric acid, pepsin, and bile salts. Beyond its barrier function, sucralfate stimulates the synthesis of endogenous prostaglandins, promotes angiogenesis, and binds growth factors like epidermal growth factor (EGF) to facilitate tissue repair. It is also investigated for topical applications in radiation-induced dermatitis, oral mucositis, and inflammatory bowel disease, as well as for use as a phosphate binder in patients with chronic kidney disease.
