Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sucroferric oxyhydroxide (PA21) + omeprazole refers to the co-administration of the iron-based phosphate binder sucroferric oxyhydroxide and the proton pump inhibitor omeprazole. This combination was specifically evaluated by Vifor Pharma in clinical pharmacology studies (such as NCT01461434) to investigate potential drug-drug interactions. Sucroferric oxyhydroxide is a polynuclear iron(III)-oxyhydroxide complex used to control serum phosphorus levels in patients with chronic kidney disease on dialysis by binding dietary phosphate in the gastrointestinal tract. Omeprazole is a substituted benzimidazole that suppresses gastric acid secretion by irreversible inhibition of the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme system. The interaction study aimed to determine if the presence of PA21, which can sequester various compounds in the gut, clinically significantly altered the pharmacokinetics or absorption of omeprazole.
