Overview

Sucrose is a nonreducing disaccharide composed of glucose and fructose linked via their anomeric carbons. It is commonly known as table sugar or saccharose and is commercially produced from sugarcane or sugar beet. In the pharmaceutical context, sucrose is primarily used as an excipient to impart sweetness and improve the palatability of oral medications such as chewable tablets, syrups, lozenges, and gums[1][2]. Medically, oral sucrose solution (typically 24%) is used in infants for procedural pain management due to its ability to stimulate endogenous opioid release through oral sensory pathways[3][5]. Sucrose has also been formulated in products for constipation management by increasing stool bulk[8]. It does not have a direct pharmacological action on specific molecular targets but acts through taste-mediated mechanisms when used for analgesia in infants.
