Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sucrosomal iron (also referred to as sucrosomial iron) is an innovative oral iron formulation consisting of a ferric pyrophosphate core encapsulated within a phospholipid bilayer membrane and a sucrester (sucrose esters of fatty acids) matrix, forming a "sucrosome". This unique delivery system protects the iron from the acidic gastric environment, preventing gastric irritation and avoiding direct contact with the intestinal mucosa. It is absorbed in the small intestine via alternative pathways (including M-cells of Peyer's patches, transcellular, and paracellular routes) that are independent of the divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT-1) and largely unaffected by hepcidin levels. This results in high bioavailability and excellent gastrointestinal tolerability compared to traditional oral iron salts. It is widely used as a dietary supplement to treat or prevent iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia, particularly in patients who are intolerant to conventional oral iron or as an alternative to intravenous iron in settings such as chronic kidney disease, oncology, and pre-operative care.
