Overview

Sugammadex is a selective relaxant binding agent (SRBA) designed to reverse the effects of neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs), specifically the aminosteroid compounds rocuronium and vecuronium, used during general anesthesia. It is a modified gamma-cyclodextrin with a lipophilic core that encapsulates the NMBA molecule in a 1:1 ratio, forming a stable guest-host complex. This chelation effectively lowers the free concentration of the NMBA in the plasma, promoting its dissociation from nicotinic acetylcholine receptors at the neuromuscular junction and allowing for rapid recovery of muscle function. The formulation with sodium chloride typically refers to the clinical preparation of sugammadex sodium in a saline solution for intravenous injection. Originally developed by Organon and later acquired by Merck & Co. (MSD), it is marketed under the brand name Bridion.
