Sugarless gum is a non-pharmacological intervention used to promote the recovery of bowel motility and prevent postoperative ileus, particularly following Cesarean sections. The intervention works through "sham feeding," which stimulates the cephalic-vagal reflex. This stimulation triggers the release of gastrointestinal hormones such as gastrin, neurotensin, and cholecystokinin, and increases the production of saliva and pancreatic secretions. These physiological responses collectively enhance intestinal peristalsis and accelerate the return of normal bowel function. In clinical trials conducted by Cairo University, patients chew a stick of sugarless gum (such as Samara gum) for short intervals periodically after surgery.
