Overview

Suk-Saiyasna is a traditional Thai herbal medicinal formulation historically used for its sedative and sleep-enhancing properties. The remedy contains a mixture of 12 herbal ingredients in specific proportions, including camphor and Azadirachta indica, with cannabis (Cannabis sativa) as a notable component. Its use was discontinued when cannabis became regulated under narcotics laws but has re-emerged following the relaxation of drug control laws in Thailand. Pharmacological studies indicate that Suk-Saiyasna exerts sedative–hypnotic effects by modulating GABAergic neurons via GABAA receptors and activating cannabinoid CB1 receptors. It has demonstrated efficacy in animal models for reducing anxiety-like behavior, increasing sleep duration, and impairing motor coordination at higher doses. In clinical settings, it is primarily prescribed for insomnia but also used for headache, loss of appetite, numbness, and Parkinson’s disease symptoms.
