SUL-238 is a first-in-class, orally administered small molecule drug designed to target mitochondrial dysfunction by protecting and improving mitochondrial function. Inspired by mechanisms observed in hibernating animals, SUL-238 prevents the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) within mitochondria, thereby maintaining cellular energy production and preventing cell death. The compound acts by preventing reverse electron flux in mitochondria and free electron spillover, which helps restore endothelium-dependent vasodilation and reduce vascular aging features such as arterial stiffening. Preclinical studies have shown benefits in models of accelerated vascular aging, while early clinical development is focused on chronic diseases associated with mitochondrial dysfunction. SUL-238 is being developed for indications including Alzheimer's disease, chronic heart failure, chronic kidney disease (CKD), pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), sepsis-associated acute kidney injury (AKI), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and potentially aging-related conditions[1][2][3][4][5][6].
