Overview

Sulbactam is a small molecule beta-lactamase inhibitor used primarily in combination with beta-lactam antibiotics to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It works by irreversibly inhibiting bacterial beta-lactamase enzymes, which are responsible for hydrolyzing and inactivating many penicillin and cephalosporin antibiotics. By blocking these enzymes, sulbactam restores or enhances the activity of partner antibiotics against beta-lactamase-producing bacteria. Sulbactam itself has weak intrinsic antibacterial activity but can inhibit penicillin-binding proteins (PBP1 and PBP3), particularly in certain species such as Acinetobacter baumannii. It is commonly combined with ampicillin (Unasyn), cefoperazone (Sulperazon), or durlobactam (Xacduro) for clinical use[1][5][6].
