sulbactam pivoxil

Sulbactam pivoxil is the oral prodrug form of sulbactam, a semi-synthetic beta-lactamase inhibitor. After oral administration, the ester bond in sulbactam pivoxil is cleaved to release active sulbactam. Sulbactam acts as a suicide inhibitor of bacterial beta-lactamase enzymes by irreversibly binding to their active site, thereby preventing these enzymes from degrading co-administered beta-lactam antibiotics and improving their efficacy. Sulbactam itself has weak antibacterial activity through inhibition of penicillin-binding proteins (PBP) 1 and 3 but not PBP2. The primary clinical use is as an adjuvant with other beta-lactams for treating infections caused by beta-lactamase-producing bacteria[1][2][4][6].
